Dinner

Three people I’d like to invite to dinner: Deng Xiaoping, Augustus Caesar and David Lean. Deng because his life was the 20th Century, Augustus because he invented ‘benign dictatorship’ and Lean because he understood Great Men and the epic narrative.

Why only three? And what about the other standard historical diners like Caesar, Shakespeare etc?

With me as host then the three guests make up an intimate quartet. Anything more and the conversation will splinter, anything less and it never flows.
